Sometimes art isn't what we think it is. And sometimes creating looks different than we thought it would. And sometimes we need to re-frame our reason for creating in the first place before we can truly create what our hearts want to create.

WHAT'S IN TODAY'S EPISODE:

As I worked through the creative process on my newest project, I found that doubt and insecurity kept creeping in and stealing my joy. In this episode, I share about how I’m learning to create without the fear of failure and my inspiration for doing so.

Jul 13, 2016

I think what we believe is really doubt and insecurity sometimes is our fear of our own stories. There are so many layers of shame and fear of judgement that we must first peel away before we can learn to accept.

WHAT'S IN TODAY'S EPISODE:

In business and in life, one of the biggest struggles we face is learning to accept our own stories. All too often, shame and judgement get in the way. Mira beautifully shares her story and her journey to overcome her own shame and fear of judgement. We talk about so many heart-deep topics in life and business - finding balance, running a business through heartache and bad days, imposter syndrome, and so much more.

I have so many moments of pure and utter loneliness ... like I'm the only one of the world who feels the way I do. And I wallow. Oh, how I wallow. But then I realize ... I'm not the only one! I cannot be the only person that feels this way right now. And there's no greater power than in a simple "me too". You're not the only one struggling with FOMO, boo.

WHAT'S IN TODAY'S EPISODE:

FOMO has gotten a rap for being this funny acronym that gets tossed around on social media. But there’s real, raw repercussions behind FOMO … repercussions that leave you devaluing your worth, questioning your enoughness, and shaming yourself into doubt and insecurity. So, I’m shedding light on this hard truth that we all struggle with.

After a ripe ol' quarter of a century spent on this planet, I think Amanda may have figured out the secret to living a fulfilled life ... choose happy. That's what she said. She looked out of her bedroom window one day, at the brightest blue sky she'd ever seen. In that moment, she made a decision to choose happy, and it changed her life forever.

WHAT'S IN TODAY'S EPISODE:

A bright light in your headphones. That’s the best way I can describe today’s episode. Amanda is a wedding photographer, mother of 3, and chooser of happy. She shares her story of learning to choose happy and choosing a small, tiny condo and an amazing life rather than settling for good enough. We talk balance, burnout, and the stress of people-pleasing. And this badass mama gets real about the struggles of raising three beautiful girls while growing her business.

It's not that I want grit to have a bad rep. Grit is pretty fucking awesome. But I think we all look better when we're illuminated by our truth. So, I want to tell you the truth about grit. I want to tell you what it is, but more importantly, what it is not. Because the truth is, grit isn't pretty. But grit in action is unstoppable.

Our greatest life is just on the other side of fear. Living an authentic life takes guts. It takes courage. Growing and running a business that reflects your most authentic life is even scarier. I'm so thankful for amazing human beings like Caroline who are leading the way and inspiring us through her most authentic story and self.

Caroline’s story begins back in college, as your typical overachiever. Caroline shares her super relatable story of going down her original career path and making all of these decisions because it’s what others wanted her to do. Her story evolves from wanting to become a doctor, because she simply wanted other people to think she was smart, to today, an artist, working for herself, running her own business, and living her most authentic life that continues to evolve.

Sometimes our truths crush us. But sometimes it's the weight of the truth that's unbearable. And the most interesting part? Sometimes our greatest truths manifest themselves as these made-up lies to hide the truth. It's about the get real ...

  WHAT'S IN TODAY'S EPISODE:

In this episode, I talk about the crushing weight of the guilt of our truths … the guilt we place upon our hearts for our big, scary truths. It’s debilitating. I open up and share about my own personal struggles with the truths of my wedding month and honeymoon, and I share how we can best overcome this guilt ... because we're not alone in the soul-crushing weight of our truths.

I'm not a mom. But some of these podcast episodes are my favorite. Getting a glimpse into the doubts and insecurities and struggles and ugly, unpretty parts of motherhood is enlightening. We spend so much of life running from our truest self, trying to fit into this version that we think we "should" be. We build businesses crafted after what everyone else is doing without taking a second to think about what we really want. The truth is, being your truest self in life and in business may be hard at first, but Caroline shows how you shine once you make that shift. So, what happens when you make your dreams a reality and you're not happy? What happens when you accomplish the goal you've been working towards all year, yet you feel empty?

It's like a rat stuck in a wheel. You're not actually going anywhere. You're so busy chasing these empty, meaningless things that you're unaware of where your own happiness and fulfillment is coming from.

Now, don't get me wrong. When you're busy hustling, it doesn't seem empty. And it does seem like it's exactly what you want. But why then do you end up feeling so empty and unfulfilled even when you finally "make it"?

Dream chasing is a beautiful way to spend your life. Making your dreams a reality is admirable. Lots of people may know your name. You may make a whole lot of money. But all of that is meaningless if you're not inherently fulfilled by it.

WHAT'S IN TODAY'S PODCAST:

I talk about dream-chasing and goal-setting. I talk about how we place these heavy expectations of our own happiness and fulfillment upon accomplishing these goals or making these dreams a reality. And inevitably, we end up feeling unfulfilled, discontent, and empty. I also share with you my own personal stories of empty dream-chasing and my go-to mentor for overcoming all of this.

I believe whole-heartedly that if a lady wants to curse, she damn well can.

I'm introducing something new today - "Bull Shit Boxes". And I'm sharing with you my own personal struggle with body image recently and how that affected me as a boss lady and entrepreneur. I'm talking about how we put ourselves in these boxes (bull shit boxes) that we let prevent us from being able to chase our dreams. We tell ourselves that we're not worthy of or capable of this great dream chasing because we're "not thin enough" or "don't have the right clothes" or "the Instagram-worthy desk". It's bull shit. And I'm getting real about my feelings on this topic with you in today's episode.

WHAT'S IN TODAY'S PODCAST:

I share my recent struggles with body image. And I explain a new concept - “bull shit boxes” - and talk about how they hold us back from chasing our big, beautiful dreams.

We set these expectations for ourselves, almost without even noticing. "I must get 30 likes on this photo, or I suck." "I have to find two new customers today, or I'm going to be a failure." "If I eat another donut, I'm a fatso who hasn't worked out in a week and needs to go on a diet." A lot of times, when we step back and examine the expectation we're wrestling with, the expectation makes NO sense at all.

Yet, we allow these expectations to limit our abilities, our actions, and our worth. These are self-limiting expectations. And they're dream haters. And big piles of manure.

WHAT'S IN TODAY'S PODCAST:

I talk about self-limiting expectations: what they are, my own personal struggle with them recently , and how we can overcome them.

The question "Am I enough?" follows me around every day. I struggle with self-worth and "enoughness" amidst the constant that is social media and feeling good in my own skin. I don't think that I'm alone, though. I think this question is one that we all struggle with.

Questioning our worth and doubting whether we're enough is a part of the human struggle. The bad news is that it's something you will struggle with forever. The good news is that you're not alone.

Heather beautifully articulates her story, her thoughts, and makes you feel like you're reading a good book when you talk to her. Her calm presence makes you feel right at home. I hope that her story means as much to you as it does to me.

I feel like I'm giving the biggest speech of my life, on a stage, in front of thousands of people (or the three who are actually reading this!), and I start mumbling incoherently. Making no sense at all. Wide eyed.

I am at a loss for words, y'all. I honestly cannot even begin to think of what to say that even begins to describe all of the wonderfully thrilling and terrifying emotions I feel right now.

This is the very first episode of the Grit and Glitter Podcast.

Six months ago, I was dreaming about launching this big, beautiful passion project. This morning when I woke up and realized this dream of mine was actually a real thing now, my heart stopped. It was the most beautiful, most terrifying emotion ever.

I hope you love it.

In today's podcast, I'm sharing the "why" and the heart behind the podcast. I'm sharing with you the inspiration behind this dream of mine, where it all started, and why I'm creating this for you. Yes, you.
